EMOTIONAL EXTRACTIONS, 2023 - 2025

(Selection of a larger body of photographs)

Emotional Extractions by the artist Duarte Perry is a body of work, chronicling his journey through nostalgia, grief, and loss, prompted by his father’s battle with a degenerative disease and eventual passing. Through his work, Perry seeks to “resume and encapsulate this chapter of his life”, confronting the emotional complexity that arises when loved ones fade from our lives – both physically and in memory. The title of the series reflects the process of distilling specific moments, emotions, and relationships, turning them into something tangible yet inevitably fleeting.

At the core of the series is Perry’s use of cloth forms – abstracted, fabric-like bodies that serve as vessels for past and present familial relationships. These forms act as surrogates, embodying the absence of those who are not or no longer there.
